CULTURAL EVENT:
The History of Tango & Performance
Sunday September 12th Chevy Chase Village Hall.
Tango is a unique Argentine cultural phenomenon expressed through dance and music and in 2009, UNESCO included it on the list of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Tango came to life in the end of the nineteenth century as a result of the cultural mix in Buenos Aires in which the Italian immigrants played a pivotal part.
On our September 21 Cultural Event we invited Marcelo Gutierrez, whom presented an overview of the art form of tango from its inception, its ties with the immigrants and their music and in particular with the Italians who settled in Argentina.
Mr. Gutierrez is a world-renowned tango professional. He has traveled the world teaching and performing Argentine tango for nearly two decades. He is best known for his unique teaching technique that fuses modern dance technique and classical tango, thus making tango technique not only more attainable and understandable for students but also more natural and healthier for the body. He has been runner-up champion of the 1st Metropolitan Championship of Tango Salon in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2002, and a Finalist at the World Tango Championship in 2017, as well as judge in several dance competitions. He is very well known in the professional dance circles and his teaching philosophy analyzed in several publications.
