CONCERT FOR PIANO FOUR-HANDS: “The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri”
On the occasion of the 24th edition of the WEEK OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD, and the 50th ANNIVERSARY OF OUR ITALIAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM
The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington and the Italian Cultural Society of Washington DC (ICS) hosted a piano concert for four hands and a conversation on Dante Alighieri to kick off the XXIV Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo (Week of Italian Language in the World) on October 15, 2024.
The concert showcased the rediscovery of Cesare San Fiorenzo’s “The Divine Comedy for piano four hands,” a score forgotten for over 100 years. Pianists Elena Buttiero and Anita Frumento performed this evocative work, closely tied to the operatic world. Professor Virginia Jewiss introduced Dante Alighieri and discussed the verses that inspired the music.
A reception followed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ICS Italian Language Program, founded by Prof. Maria Guarrera Wilmeth in 1974 with support from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The Italian Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Italy graciously hosted the celebration.
