Before massive stages, the 19th-century music scene searched for a way to make performance feel raw, alive, and deeply personal. The answer was the Hauskonzert (house concert)—bringing music directly into intimate spaces where the distance between artist and audience disappeared.
It was a complete energy shift:
Community: Like the famous Schubertiades, where Franz Schubert shared his newest works not for elite critics, but during late-night gatherings among close friends.
Freedom: Like Fanny Mendelssohn, who challenged the limitations imposed on women in public musical life by organizing her own influential Sonntagsmusiken (Sunday salons) in Berlin.
Why Hauskonzert? Because music reaches its strongest emotional power when performance becomes immediate, shared, and human.
Inspired by this tradition, the Italian Choir of Washington, DC presented a relaxed end-of-year musical evening featuring a curated selection of Italian songs and an open mic jam session. The event transformed the ICS Headquarters into a welcoming musical salon where performers and audience members could connect through music, conversation, and creativity.
The evening concluded with a potluck reception, continuing the spirit of community and shared artistic experience that has always defined the Hauskonzert tradition.
