OPERA FOR PIANO FOUR HANDS: Homage to the Great Italian Opera Composers

The Italian Cultural Society of Washington presented Opera for Piano Four Hands: Homage to the Great Italian Opera Composers, an evening celebrating the richness and theatrical spirit of Italian opera through a unique piano four-hands performance by Elena Buttiero and Anita Frumento.

The program explored some of the most beloved composers of the Italian operatic tradition — including Giuseppe Verdi, Gioachino Rossini, Pietro Mascagni, Umberto Giordano, and Francesco Cilea — offering a selection of operatic transcriptions and original compositions that created an intimate yet powerful musical experience.

Inspired by the nineteenth-century tradition of adapting operas for smaller ensembles, the concert highlighted how these transcriptions evolved into expressive musical “fantasies” and paraphrases, bringing operatic masterpieces beyond the theater.

The evening also featured a special tribute to Mozart, with one of his works performed in Italian.

The event concluded with a reception and served as a fundraiser for the Maria G. Wilmeth Scholarship Awards, supporting students and the promotion of Italian language and culture.
