| Besides the monthly meetings, the Society holds other special events as follows: | |||||||||||||||||
| FERRAGOSTO Feriae Augusti were originally the festive days lasting the entire month of August, in honor of the Emperor Augustus. During this period, the Romans honored their pagan deities and women made votive offerings in temples to ask for protection during childbirth. Participation in all festivities was open also to slaves. Nowadays, Ferragosto comprises the holidays of mid August during which most Italians go on vacation. Members and friends of the Italian Cultural Society celebrate the Sunday closest to the holiday with an Italian style picnic with food, Italian games such as "bocce" and "scopa", music and entertainment. As with all Italian events children are welcome. |

FESTA
ITALIANA In 1999 the Italian Cultural Society, Holy Rosary Church and Fieri of DC joined forces to revive a long-lost tradition --an Italian street festival-- in the location where once stood Washington's Little Italy. Festa Italiana was born by the sponsorships of the three organizations. The street festival is held annually toward the end of September or early October. On this occasion, Italians and Italian Americans living in the metropolitan area, come together to celebrate their heritage. The Festa Italiana is held on Third Street between G and F Sts. NW all around Holy Rosary Church. Every year a different region of Italy is featured with a display of crafts, food, music and dances. Check "Poche Parole" for the date of the next Festa and come ready to enjoy all things Italian. Click here for more details about this year's Festa Italiana, or go to www.festaitalianadc.org. |

FESTA DI NATALE On the December monthly meeting the Society celebrates the Christmas Holidays with a musical program. On December 14 we will have a piano recital of holiday music and a sing-along of carols, and Santa's visit. Children are welcome and parents are invited to bring gifts with the name of a child clearly visible (be kind to old Santa) for Santa to distribute. This year La Befana will accompany Santa. |
